LEXINGTON, Ky. - Amy McGrath has officially outlasted the opposition and won the Democratic primary in the 6th U.S. Congressional District.

McGrath has no prior political experience but ran her race relying on her 20-year stint as a combat aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps.

McGrath’s biggest opposition came from Lexington Mayor Jim Gray who was also vying for his first opportunity in Congress. Gray was able to garner approximately 50 percent of votes in Fayette County, but he was unable to replicate that success throughout the rest of the district. Gray's campaign ran a negative ad on McGrath's time spent in the district, but it proved to not help him secure the nomination.

Gray would later throw his support behind McGrath in his concession speech.

State Sen. Reggie Thomas, D-Lexington, also put his support behind McGrath after the race was called.

She will go on to face incumbent Republican Congressman Andy Barr in the general election. Barr easily defeated challenger Chuck Eddy in the Republican primary.

Gray conceded the race to McGrath around 8 p.m.
