Annual basketball tournament held at Douglass Park

People from all over the area came out to Douglass Park, Sunday for 'Super Sunday' a basketball tournament that has a long history in Lexington.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - People from all over the area came out to Douglass Park, Sunday for 'Super Sunday' a basketball tournament that has a long history in Lexington.

"It's kind of like a family reunion," Jackie French said . You come back and you see people that you grew up with because over there use to be Charlotte Court and a lot of people grew up over there and of course all that has changed now and it's just good to come back to the park and see the people you kind of grew up with."

Two years ago organizers moved the tournament from Douglass Park because of an increase of crime in the neighborhood, but organizer Jackie French says it was important to bring it back to the park.

"A lot of times we have people say there's nothing to do so we try to offer things to get them to come back and participate," she said.

She says this tournament sheds a positive light on Douglass Park. The tournament offers kids and adults playing in summer league a chance to show off their skills. Parents watching today's tournament say a police presence makes them feel at ease.

"You can't let the criminals take over," Tim Mathews said. You have to take charge and not stand for it. I'm full support of police and the city of Lexington the kids the parents and everybody that wants to do right."

For now French says they plan to keep the tournament at Douglass park. She says she hopes it inspires others to host positive events at the park.
