Education department wants to hear from public about changes to academic standards

Kentucky Department of Education

FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Kentucky Department of Education is moving forward with a review of English/language arts and math standards in schools.

The move is a part of Senate Bill 1 passed by Kentucky legislators this year. The bill requires the department to implement a review process beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. The current schedule calls for one or two content areas to be reviewed each year and every six years after that on a rotating basis.

Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt says they're starting with English and math because those are the foundations of other learning.

"What we are doing is putting these out there and basically saying this is a draft a current draft of standards. What's your feedback on this current draft? If you don't like it, tell us," Pruitt said.

The English/language arts standards, as revised, are now available for public feedback online.

The revised mathematics standards are also available online.

All Kentuckians are invited to provide comment on the revised standards.

The Kentucky Department of Education will collect input on all of the draft standards in English/language arts and mathematics until Sept. 15.
