Kentucky couple evacuating Florida after cruise cut short
MIAMI - Lexington residents Rachel and Josh Lindsey are on the road, heading back to Kentucky after severe weather cut their cruise short.
The couple took off from Miami for an anniversary cruise to relax, but Hurricane Irma threw everything overboard. They had to cut their cruise short.
"We thought it would be a lot worse trying to get off the ship, and out of Miami, but that was actually, somewhat, of the easy part," Josh Lindsey said.
The couple arrived back in Florida to make the drive back to Lexington, but they ran into problems finding gas for the commute.
"When we were in Key West, we saw people that were probably waiting there for an hour or more to get gas," Lindsey said. "We drove around multiple different places. We went to probably 10 or 11 gas stations and eventually we ran into some local people."
After filling up the tank, the Lindseys spent a lot of time sitting in standstill traffic as thousands of individuals evacuated Florida. The couple says things have started to get easier since they crossed the border into Georgia.
"A little bit of a relief knowing that we are actually away from it, so if something happens, happens now, we're a little better off."
