KSP trooper injured in Laurel County crash on I-75

Kentucky State Police Trooper Houston Lewis

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. - A Kentucky State Police trooper is injured following a crash on I-75 in Laurel County.

KSP dispatchers confirm the trooper's vehicle was the only vehicle involved in the crash in the northbound lanes near the 41-mile marker.

State Police have identified the trooper as Houston E. Lewis who serves Post 13 in Hazard. Police say the trooper was either on his way to school or to Frankfort when he lost control for unknown reasons. His cruiser went down a 150-foot embankment. Lewis was able to call 911 around 9:06 to report he was involved in a crash and trapped in the wreckage.

An officer who found the trooper says he told him he had crashed two hours prior.

The London/Laurel County Rescue Squad removed the trooper from the vehicle. An air ambulance flew the trooper to UK Chandler Medical Center for treatment. State police say Lewis is listed in critical condition, but that he was alert and talking when emergency crews placed him in the helicopter.

The northbound lanes of I-75 were shut down for hours but have since reopened.
