Lexington woman gets surprise call from Donny Osmond

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WDKY) -- When you're not feeling well, sometimes the last thing you want to do is pick up the telephone. But Pam Carroll is glad she took a call that came in last week.

Carroll had to be convinced it was Donny Osmond on the other end of the line. But when he sang a few bars of "Puppy Love," all doubt disappeared.

Carroll, 55, has been a lifelong Osmond fan and calls him "the best-looking 60-year-oldout there." Husband Keith Carroll doesn't mind.

Carroll was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 14 months ago and it's progressing rapidly. The cancer recently moved into her bones, lungs and liver. She stopped taking chemotherapy treatments because they are no longer effective.

Her co-workers at the Lexington VA Medical Center wanted to do something special for her and had been raising money to send her to Las Vegas to see Osmond in concert. But now, she's not able to take long trips. That's when friend Mike Moore decided to try to arrange a phone call from Carroll's lifelong celebrity crush.

Father Jim Sichko, an evangelist with the Roman Catholic Diocese in Lexington, was instrumental in making the connection. Sichko booked Osmond to perform at a church fundraiser in Richmond in 2013 and had a relationship with the singer. A call to Osmond's manager set the wheels in motion.

The call lasted 14 minutes and the two talked about their families, work and music. Osmond also asked about Carroll's cancer and said he'd be praying for her.

Carroll said the call really lifted her spirits. She told Osmond talking to him was "on her bucket list."

Carroll says her faith in God has helped her keep a positive attitude and unafraid of what happens next.

"I've learned to love life," she said. "We don't know what tomorrow will bring and I appreciate every single day I'm here."

And one day stands out-- the day she talked to Donny Osmond.
