NELSON COUNTY, Ky. - News of a deadly crash that killed three people and sent another to the hospital in Nelson County left a central Kentucky community in shock.

Police say a semi headed east crossed the center lanes of Bluegrass Parkway and hit a car killing three family members inside it. The Nelson County coroner identified the victims as Delmer Odell, 72, and his wife Delores Odell, 71, as well the couple's granddaughter, Kieren, 3, all of Harrodsburg.

The news hit hard in Mercer County, especially at Ebenezer Church of Christ. The Odells were members there. Their son Joel is the lead pastor.

"Their trip was about life. What do you do on your day off? You go to Bowling Green and see a flower garden and spend the night," fellow church member Mike McRae said.

The family's reach extended well beyond the church. Sheriff Ernie Kelty says he met Delmer Odell more than 20-years ago.

"He helped me with personal issues. When I lost my mom, my dad... when my daughter was killed in a car wreck, he was there for me many times."

Sheriff Kelty had the difficult task of informing the Odell's relatives about the tragedy.

"To have to go to Joel yesterday and tell him what happened, that he lost his family ... my heart and prayers and thoughts are with them," Sheriff Kelty said. "I'll do anything I can to help them because I know Delmer would do that for me."

The coroner says another granddaughter was also in the car at the time of the crash. Medical crews transported the five-year-old to Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville. Her condition is unknown at this point, but she is expected to survive.
