Thieves steal from Corbin church, cause extensive damage inside
CORBIN, Ky. - Someone broke into a Laurel County church causing extensive damage. The crime happened at Grace on the Hill United Methodist Church in Corbin.
Surveillance cameras captured images of two people breaking into the church. Once inside, police say the masked suspects spent several hours rifling through church property. The thieves also knocked out the glass from several doors so they could get through the building.
In addition to causing thousands of dollars in damage, the burglars made off with a safe that was mounted to a wall. Church officials say the safe contained a small amount of money and paperwork related to Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University.
Church officials spent most of Wednesday cleaning up the mess.
"It's kinda sad," said Gus Clouse who is the assistant to the Pastor. "We have a food pantry that helps people out, we always help people out with their electric bills and other things. So if someone needs help, we're always very good about helping people out. So it's kinda sad they thought they would have to do this to get money."
Church officials had to cancel preschool and daycare activities at their facility while they cleaned up the glass. They say everything is back on schedule for Thursday. They also plan on having Wednesday evening services.
Anyone with information on the crime can call Corbin Police.
