Victim's name released in Lexington neighborhood shooting
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Fayette County Coroner’s office say 29-year-old Austin Murphy has died after a shooting on Monday.
Police say they were called to Greenleaf Drive just before 5 p.m. on Monday.
When they arrived, they say they found Murphy dead outside of a home with an apparent shotgun wound.
The Fayette County Coroner’s office says 29-year-old Austin Murphy died of an apparent gunshot wound sustained after being shot by 65-year-old Curtis Flora.
Fox 56 talked with a man who says Austin Murphy was his cousin.
"He's young and a little mischievous, but at that age, probably most of us were," said Leland Hollis, the victim's cousin. "I don't think it deserved him being killed."
Police arrested Curtis Flora, 65, and charged him with murder. He lives across the street from where the victim was found.
Police say Flora admitted he was the shooter and said he had an ongoing dispute with Murphy. Family members say Murphy often visited his girlfriend who lives across the street from Flora.
"There was a boom. It rattled my windows and that's when I looked out my window and seen who was holding the gun," says Tiffany Taylor.
Taylor lives near Flora and says she can recall hearing the altercation that led to the deadly shooting.
Flora had his first court appearance by video on Tuesday where the Judge entered a not guilty plea for Flora.
Flora said in court that he could not afford his own attorney and the judge would review whether he's eligible for a public defender.
The judge did not set a bond for FLora.
Flora is due back in court on Monday morning.
The coroner says an autopsy will be performed on Tuesday.
