Police are investigating several incidents where fliers with propaganda were posted by individuals claiming to be KKK members in a Northern Virginia neighborhood.

Residents in the neighborhood in the 700 block of Aurora Court NE in Leesburg said they discovered the fliers on Friday evening.

“I’m just very surprised. Shocked. I’ve never seen anything like that around here before," said Betsy Carroll, who found one of the fliers outside of her home. "I’m surprised that’s happening in the year 2018."

Police said the materials appear to have been distributed randomly.

“To be honest, when I saw that it was from the KKK, I pretty much threw it in the trash,” said Carroll. “I didn’t read it very closely."

Authorities believe the fliers were posted because of the close proximity to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is on Monday.

Carroll said neighbors are already talking about ways to come together and send a message of unity.

“I know there are some people talking about on Facebook maybe making some signs to put in yards supporting Martin Luther King Jr., some quotes from him,” she said.

Police ask that anyone with information contact them at (703) 771-4500.
