Corbin man insists wife committed suicide despite murder charge
CORBIN, Ky. - Laurel County authorities say a Corbin man is behind bars after shooting his wife Wednesday morning.
Detectives went to a home in Laurel County just after noon Wednesday after receiving a report of a suicide from the suspect's mother. When they arrived, they found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds behind a home.
Investigators later determined that the woman's husband shot and killed her following an argument.
Joshua Tate Davenport, 38, was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder before being booked into the Laurel County detention center.
The victim was identified as 38-year-old Stephanie Steenburgin Davenport. She was found with two gunshot wounds.
Despite the investigators' findings, Davenport is maintaining his innocence.
“He is maintaining it was a suicide, I was up here during the interviews yesterday and he went to jail maintaining that she had killed herself," said Sheriff Gilbert Acciardo.
The victim's mother says the two were only married five months, and their relationship became rocky because of her husband's alleged drug activity.
A check of Davenport's criminal history shows numerous drug offenses dating back 13 years.
