Phelps head football coach back on field after shooting
PIKE COUNTY, Ky. - Phelps head football coach, David Jones, was shot in the stomach last week. He returned to the field on Wednesday afternoon.
"It has just been tough," Jones said. "It is tough."
During practice, Jones sat in a vehicle on the field as the team played. He said he still has staples in his stomach but he will recover.
Jones shared when he was first shot in the stomach, his only thought was getting to a doctor.
"It was really just getting to the hospital," Jones said.
According to Jones, his determination to recover mixed with faith in God have helped him on the path to recovery.
"I just never lost faith you know, I never lost faith," Jones said.
Jones said he is thankful for all the community support.
Many players on the team told WYMT TV in Hazard that they are thankful their coach is back on the field. Junior, Seth Elkins, said the team now needs to focus.
"When he got shot it just took the whole team out of focus," Elkins said. "So we really need to get back in focus."
The team will play their first game on August 25.
