Athlete of the Week: Boyle County's Reese Smith
Boyle County's Reese Smith is the Fox 56 High School Sports Extra Athlete of the Week presented by CTE, the College for Technical Education. Smith was a difference maker in the Rebels' 40-21 win over Corbin to claim the Class 3A state championship last Friday, Dec. 1.
On Boyle County's first possession, Reed Lanter found Smith for a 38-yard touchdown pass to put the Rebels on the board first. About a minute-and-a-half later, Smith picked off a Redhounds' pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to stake his team to a 14-0 lead.
With 3:17 remaining in the second quarter, after Corbin had cut Boyle's lead to 21-14, Lanter connected with Smith again on a 34-yard TD strike to give the Rebels a 27-14 lead.
After Corbin blocked a Boyle County punt and recovered it at the Rebels' 17-yard line with 1:02 left in the first half, Smith snagged his second interception to deny the Redhounds points and secure a two-touchdown lead heading into halftime.
On the opening possession of the second half, Smith hauled in another TD pass from Lanter from 5 yards out for a commanding 33-14 lead.
Smith finished the game with 5 catches for 120 yards and three touchdowns to go with his two interceptions, including the 40-yard pick six.
