Dan Rieffer has been co-host of the award-winning Fox 56 High School Sports Extra since its inception in August of 2014. The Fox 56 High School Sports Extra, which airs Friday nights at 10:40 p.m., took first place for Best Sports Prep Show in the 2016 Kentucky Associated Press Broadcasters awards.
Dan has been a sports director at two stations during his sports broadcasting career, most recently at Lexington’s ABC affiliate. Dan covered central Kentucky sports there from 2008 to 2012, first as a weekend sports anchor, then as sports director. His coverage of University of Kentucky athletics has included the exit of basketball coach Billy Gillispie to the Cats’ 2012 national championship, as well as Rich Brooks’ retirement from football to the hiring of Mark Stoops.
Dan’s TV debut came with Fox 56 in 2000 as host of the High School Sports Files, which was a weekly, half-hour prep show that he continued to host for three years. The next three years Dan spent at CBS affiliate WRBL in Columbus, Georgia, eventually as sports director. During his time in the Alabama-Georgia border town of Columbus, Dan covered Auburn and Georgia football; NASCAR, including the Daytona 500; the Atlanta Braves and Falcons; and the Masters in Augusta.
Dan earned his Bachelor of Arts in journalism and psychology from the University of Kentucky and is a graduate of Williamsburg High School.
He got his start in broadcasting in his hometown of Williamsburg, Kentucky at age 16 as a disc jockey at WEKC – 710 AM. His love for radio continues as Dan currently co-hosts a sports talk show on Lexington’s ESPN affiliate on the weekends. He’s also been a contributing writer for The Cats’ Pause basketball and football yearbooks since 2014.
Dan and his wife, Jennifer, met at Fox 56 and married in 2003. They became foster parents to two-year-old twin boys in 2011 and have since become their adoptive parents.
