RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) – Eastern Kentucky University has announced it has fired Dan McHale after a 38-55 record through less than three seasons.

“After reviewing our men’s basketball program, I determined a change in leadership is needed at this time,” Director of Athletics Stephen Lochmueller said. “We want to thank Dan McHale for his service to Eastern Kentucky University, our community and the men’s basketball program. We wish Dan, Jackie and their family all the best in the future.”

McHale compiled a 16-34 record in conference games during his tenure, and the team never qualified for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. Before McHale, the team reached the OVC Tournament 13 straight times and played in three NCAA Tournaments during that stretch.

EKU announced assistant coach Reece Gains will take the role of acting head coach while the university begins a national search for McHale’s replacement.
