Demand for COVID-19 testing surges in Lexington

Coronavirus

If you spent the holidays with a large group, the CDC says you should quarantine and get tested. Testing facilities in Lexington are preparing for a surge.

The testing site in the Blue Lot of Kroger Field is seeing about 2,000 appointments a day.

“Just to give that some perspective, in the middle of December we were doing about 1,000. So almost double what we are doing in the non-holiday rush season” Dr. Luke Murray said.

Dr. Murray says WildHealth has made some changes.

The testing site has expanded hours from 8 AM until 8 PM, seven days a week. They have more lines available depending on how many appointments are scheduled. They’ve also geared up with plenty of PPE and testing materials to avoid a shortage of supplies.

“In order to get ahead of that, we locked in kind of a consistent subscription, so to speak, where we’re getting more than what we need on a weekly basis,” he explained.

Dr. Murray says they’re able to get results quickly, usually within the same day.

“It is not a ‘rapid test.’ It is a gold standard test that we do very rapidly,” he said.

He also said people can help make the process quicker by signing up for appointments early, instead of the same day. He explained that’s how they’re able to determine staffing. So if you’re planning a trip or gathering, you should also schedule a test at least one day in advance.

“The problem comes when we show up and are ready to test 1,000 people, and we end up having 1,600 appointments in that day. It’s just really tough to plan for something like that.”
