LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – For this week’s Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week, an Army reservist in Lexington for a training exercise had his equipment stolen from the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express on Sharkey Way where he was staying.
The good news? The hotel has good video of the crook Lexington Police say took it.
A training exercise brought Kyle Ashley of Dayton, Ohio, to Kentucky the last weekend of July. Late on the night of the 31st, he and his buddy straightened up their military gear in the back of Ashley’s truck then went inside a Holiday Inn Express to rest before their early wake up call. The next morning, it was all gone.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Ashley said. “I called my buddy over and said ‘look,’ Everything that I’ve had. Everything I’ve gathered, been issued to me, bought for almost the past nine years, it’s gone now.”
Detectives played back the surveillance video and found this. A man lurking around Ashley’s truck. It was 1:23 a.m.
“The gentleman is watching, it appears he cased and saw our victim unload his stuff and he watched and watched and watched,” Det. Anthony Delimpo said. “Then went to the vehicle and took his time getting what he wanted out of it.”
An arrest may not bring Ashley’s stuff back, but it would offer a little consolation for the soldier who still went to work that next morning without the things he needed most.
“The little things like underwear and socks, they were all gone,” Ashley said. “Trying to gather enough to make me comfortable and continue the mission and go out on this training exercise.”
