LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Crime Stoppers, for Crime of the Week, is looking for an upset burglar. Police are hoping someone can identify the man who shot his way into a Lexington gas station but left empty-handed.

The BP gas station at the corner of Mapleleaf and Man O’ War sees a lot of business hours traffic. It’s usually quiet once it closes. But, early on the morning of September 5, alarms and the sound of gunfire sent officers scrambling.

“Watching the video from the inside, you can see the rounds coming through the door, which is alarming,” said Det. Anthony Delimpo. “A few minutes later, a man kicks the door in.”

Once he’s in, he doesn’t stay long or look around. Police say he seems to have come in looking for just one thing.

“He very angrily walks in, looks at the cash register like he had something in mind he wanted to take or maybe thought the cash register would be open or unlocked, and realizes it’s locked up,” Delimpo said. “He seems frustrated or angry. He turns around, stomps back out, and leaves.”

Turns out, the store’s owner was one step ahead of any thieves. They left the cash drawers open to show there’s nothing to steal. The man did do thousands of dollars in damage to the store’s front window and likely the staff’s sense of security.

“Is he coming back? was he coming for someone in here? Why would you shoot and kick the door in? I’m sure they’re living with a certain level of anxiety and fear.”

Lexington Police say video from outside the store showed the man was driving a black sedan.
