LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — On Tuesday, Congressman Andy Barr (KY-06) accepted a Meritorious Achievement Award from the American Heart Association on behalf of his late wife, Carol Barr.

Carol was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse at a young age, a condition that results in cardiac death in 0.2% of individuals. She tragically passed from cardiac death in June of 2020.

In lieu of his wife’s death, Congressman Barr created the Cardiovascular Advances Research Opportunities Act (CAROL Act) to invest in research and treatment for heart diseases.

Last year the American Heart Association started the Carol Barr fund to grant scholarships to women pursuing STEM careers in Kentucky.

The award Barr received on behalf of his wife honors the commitment shown toward creating awareness and collecting funds for necessary research surrounding heart disease treatment.
