Crews respond to large fire at Lincoln County ‘tire store’

Kentucky

A Lincoln County family business is a total loss after a fire destroyed their machines and product Monday afternoon.

It happened at SMS Tire Processing in the Brodhead area. Owner John Simpson, who started the business nearly 20 years ago with his father, says he plans to rebuild his family’s livelihood.

“Everything we’ve done for the last 20 something years. It’s all went up,” Simpson said.

“I’m just happy that everybody got out because before anybody seen it, it was too late. It was going up too quick,” Simpson said.

The fire started a little before 3:00 Monday afternoon. Officials say they aren’t speculating yet on what sparked the fire, but a building that housed most of the company’s equipment was burned to the ground. Simpson says they will rebuild.

“With the guys that I’ve got, they’ll help us rebuild, and we’ll be back,” Simpson said. “It’s going to take a while to get back to where we was because this equipment you don’t just find. It mostly has to be built.”

But, like Simpson and his dad did 20 years ago, he says the family will build again, thanks to all the help that came rushing when the call came in.

“We’ll get through it…. We’ve got a lot of good neighbors that’s come out to help us,” Simpson said.

He’s determined to not let the sounds of crackling flames be the last memory of this family business.

It took crews longer to battle this fire than an everyday structure fire because of the burning rubber. A tanker from Lexington had to bring in a special foam to smother the flames, which is now under control.
