LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – The Lexington Police Department took a moment Thursday, Jan. 13, to honor the passing of a former Christian County Sheriff William Dillard.

Dillard served as the first African American sheriff elected in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He was elected in 1981 but served as a deputy before that.

Friends and family said despite his historic achievement, he will be remembered for his hard work and dedication to serving his community.

Dillard was 83.
