ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (FOX 56) — A former Estill County teacher was sentenced Tuesday, Jan. 4, in a sex message case involving a minor.

Sherry Murphy, the former Spanish teacher, was indicted on charges of tampering with physical evidence and wanton endangerment in the first degree.

A Kentucky State Police investigation revealed 35-year-old Torstein Torsteinson, of Irvine, contacted a student on Facebook in an attempt to have sex in 2018.

His attempts were unsuccessful, and he and Murphy would go on to form a relationship.

Troopers said Murphy became aware of the messages but did not report them to authorities.

In a response Wednesday from Michael Eubanks, representing Murphy, FOX 56 learned Murphy did not plead guilty to any sex offenses and does not have to register as a sex offender.

Murphy received a 10-year sentence with credit for time served and up to five years diverted.

Murphy will surrender her teaching certificate during the supervised diversion.

According to Eubanks, if Murphy successfully completes the terms of the diversion agreement, all charges will be dismissed after 5 years.
