ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky police chief said an officer checking on a suspicious vehicle fatally shot an armed man during an altercation.

News outlets report Elizabethtown Police Chief Jeremy Thompson said in a statement Monday that it was imperative to share some details of what happened Saturday while Kentucky State Police investigate.

Thompson said the officer asked the man to exit the vehicle and had a conversation with him that led to an altercation. He said the man was armed and had active warrants for his arrest.

He declined to give more details about what led to the shooting, citing the state police investigation.
