LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Federal assistance has been an asset the U.S. government has always implemented, and it became more prominent through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although every state makes use of federal assistance, statistics indicate some states use it more than others.

WalletHub ranked Kentucky as the third most dependent state on federal aid for the year 2022, coming in behind Alaska (1) and Mississippi (2).

In order to determine which states are most federally dependent, WalletHub compared the 50 states across two key dimensions:

  • State residents’ dependency on federal aid
  • State government’s dependency on federal aid
