LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Three men who pleaded guilty in connection with the murder of a UK student were sentenced Thursday morning.

Jonathan Krueger, a 22-year-old UK student and photo editor at The Kentucky Kernel, was shot and killed in April 2015 during a robbery. Krueger and a friend were walking along East Maxwell Street at the time.

Roman Gonzalez Jr., Justin Smith, and Efrain Diaz Jr. took plea deals in March.

A Fayette County circuit judge sentenced Gonzalez to 35 years, Smith to 34 years, and Diaz to 20 years.

Krueger was killed soon after covering his first Final Four in 2015.

The Jonathan Krueger Memorial Scholarship was established in his honor.
