HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WDKY) – The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest after a man’s body was found on Wednesday.

The sheriff’s office said a man walking his dog on Garrard Drive near Bright Leaf Golf Course found the victim’s body around 5 p.m. We’re told the victim is a young man, possibly in his mid-20′s.

“A gentleman walking his dog saw the body lying in the area where the body was located, and he was the one who called 911 and told us,” said Cpt. Scott Elder, Mercer County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the victim’s family reported him missing earlier in the day. Information from the family led police to question 50-year-old Gerald Calhoun about the case.

“The victim’s mother had reported him missing so we had got that investigation from the city police to couple with ours and, with that information, we were able to develop a suspect,” Cpt. Mercer said.

As a result of the investigation, Calhoun was charged with murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence. He is being held in the Boyle County Detention Center.

Elder says this is the first murder investigation for the sheriff’s department since 2016. We’re told more arrests are possible.

The victim’s name and his cause of death have not been released.
