CORBIN, Ky.  – Laurel County authorities say a Corbin mom is behind bars after she was caught using her children to try to steal clothes from a Walmart.

Deputies arrived at Walmart in southern Laurel County after 3 a.m. Monday in an effort to stop the suspect after receiving a report from the company’s loss prevention team.

Store associates say the woman, later identified as 38-year-old Marlena Carter, ran into a bathroom in an effort to hide, but she would eventually return to the self-checkout line where her three children were.

Deputies discovered she was not scanning all her items in the checkout line, and her three children had “several layers of clothes, bras and shoes that they were wearing wrapped around them under their clothes.”

The amount of items Carter was suspected of taking totaled more than $750.

Carter was booked into the Laurel County Detention Center for shoplifting and three counts of unlawful transaction with a minor.
