Investigators report people are being contacted by email or a phone call. The callers claim they owe the federal, state, or local governments money and request a money order. People are also receiving calls claiming they owe the IRS money and if not paid, they could be arrested.
Georgetown police reaffirmed that no government agency will contact people over phone or email and request money be sent by money order or green dot card.
Anyone who falls victim to any of these scams is encouraged to file a report and freeze their accounts. Also, anyone questioning the legitimacy of these phone calls or emails is encouraged to contact the agency directly.
