LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Record-breaking omicron case numbers have citizens questioning what the best defense is. Research points toward the KN95 and N95 masks as effective barriers.

Cassie Prather, the public health director of the Woodford County Health Department, said these masks have an additional filter media that provide a higher level of filtration and protection for the air that is inhaled and exhaled.

“With the omicron variant, folks are more concerned about passing along the virus or contracting it themselves, so that’s why I think we’re really seeing an increase in the demand of the KN95s,” Prather said.

Additionally, these masks have more of a tight fit to the face when compared to cloth or surgical masks.

They are reusable, though, you’re encouraged to replace them when they get dirty.

While these masks are said to provide more protection, Prather said the best mask is the mask that you wear.

“At the end of the day, wearing a mask whether it be the N95, KN95, or cloth mask, any kind of barrier between the air that you inhale, or exhale is protection,” Prather said.

If you’re looking online for N95 masks, it’s recommended that you check reviews to make sure the product and company are legit.
