LEXINGTON, Ky. - First responders have successfully freed a mounted police horse after it was trapped in an open hole near Lexington's E 6th Street Tuesday evening.

Fire department officials had to work to remove the concrete around the trapped horse in order to free the animal. It's still unclear if the horse has sustained any injuries as a result of the accident.

The officer riding the horse was not injured in the accident, according to police.

The horse had to be sedated to free it from the hole. Authorities are now taking the animal to an equine hospital.
