LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Local health officials are highlighting the critical role organ donors play in the community.

UK healthcare and Kentucky organ donor affiliates joined together to celebrate national donate life month.
They raised a flag to showcase just how important organ donors are.

The flag was raised at exactly 10:08 a.m. to signify how one donor can save eight lives.

A one-minute and six-second moment of silence followed to honor the 106 thousand people who are on the national waitlist for a life-saving organ.

The chair of donation and transplant action committee said she’s excited about the number of people they’ve been able to save.

“In 2021 we did 71 livers, 16 heart transplants, 26 lung transplants, and 100 kidney transplants. So, a total of close to 250, so pretty good,” Ashley Montgomery-Yates said.

Donate life month began in 2003. If you’re interested in becoming a donor you can visit donatelife.net.
