LEXINGTON, Ky. (WDKY) – The organizer of an online campaign to help an 85-year-old McDonald’s employee in Lexington says the man is finally ready to retire.

Wendall Gill has worked at the restaurant on Richmond Road for 40 years.

In August, Gill’s wife visited him for lunch and later died of an aneurysm in the restroom at the restaurant.

Gill shared the news of his wife’s death with a customer, Todd Oldfield.

Oldfield set up an online fundraiser for Gill, who still cares for two adult special needs grandsons.

After just a month of fundraising, the GoFundMe account raised more than $115,000. The money was enough to pay off Gill’s two vehicles and his house.

Oldfield announced Tuesday that Gill put in his two weeks’ notice and plans to retire.
