Lexington Olympic fencer inspiring young athletes

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Young fencers are inspired by one of Lexington’s new Olympic gold medalists.

Lee Kiefer made history over the weekend becoming the first American woman to medal in individual foil.

The Dunbar High School graduate trains at the Bluegrass Fencers’ Club here in Lexington. Her peers stayed up late to watch her match live.

“We were like up all night watching it. We had these zoom parties,” said Jeremy Lim.

“Seeing her practicing with us, and it’s like, maybe one day we could also join her,” another peer shared.

Kiefer is set to compete again today in the women’s team quarterfinals.

Her fencing family is planning something special for her return next week.
