Motor vehicles office in Fayette County closed due to COVID-19

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WDKY) – The motor vehicle departments of the Fayette County Clerk’s Office is closed to the public beginning on Tuesday.

The clerk’s office made the announcement on Facebook Tuesday morning.

Clerk Don Blevins Jr. says one employee has a confirmed COVID case, and a second employee has a suspected case. He believes the first employee got the virus while working onsite at the office, despite the precautions in place.

The clerk’s office reopened in July and people had to schedule appointments for services. In November, the office started taking walk-ups, but, due to safety reasons, Blevins says those in-person services have now been stopped.

“The public positivity rate is so high that I think the repeated exposures is not a good idea,” Blevins said. “What we’re going to do is go back to processing by mail or online.”

Blevins says all vehicle renewals and transfer paperwork will have to be mailed in or dropped off. There is a grey drop-off box near the 2nd-floor entrance in the Helix garage.

Blevins is not sure when the motor vehicles department will reopen, but he says the phone lines at the office are still open as well.
