Deputies in Montgomery County are investigating a murder near Mount Sterling.

Sheriff Fred Shortridge said it happened Saturday evening on Washington Avenue. A man was shot and killed, and his wife was also shot.

The coroner says David N. Scott, 47,  died. Officials confirm Scott was a Montgomery County deputy jailer.

Shortridge said Scott’s wife was taken to UK Hospital in critical condition.

The accused shooter is Frances Zaayer, a neighbor of the victims. She is being held at the Powell County Detention Center and is charged with Murder, Attempted Murder and Burglary.

The sheriff said Zaayer and the victims had been in a year-long dispute. Zaayer claims Scott’s wife assaulted her last April.

Shortridge said Zaayer shot at another woman driving inside a car before shooting Scott and his wife. The woman driving was not injured.
