GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WDKY) - Detectives say the Scott County deputy shot in the line of duty Tuesday night is out of his second surgery, but he has a long way to go before he is fully recovered.

Detective Brandon Rector says deputy Jaime Morales has shown positive and encouraging signs after the second surgery. He opened his eyes and gave people two thumbs up.

This comes less than 48 hours after he was shot near the back during a shootout at an Interstate 75 rest area. The suspect, 57-year-old Edward Reynolds, was killed at the scene. Reynolds was a fugitive from justice out of Florida.

Rector says Morales was on a ventilator, but they are hoping to get him off it soon. Once that happens they hope to communicate with the deputy. Family and friends remain at the hospital.

Morales has been a Scott County deputy for more than two years. He served in the Marines before beginning his law enforcement career.
