LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Employers are hosting a ‘Stand Down’ event for veterans in Lexington.
It’s being held Friday out on Perimeter Drive, just off of New Circle Road.
Officials say they’re looking to connect veterans with employees and resources that they might need.
“We have employers, we have a little over 20 employers that are here today and a little over 20 resource vendors that are here today,” said Amy Glasscock, Bluegrass Workforce director.
Officials with Bluegrass Workforce organized the event focused on connecting veterans with the types of services they need.
“We cover 17 counties and we’ve invited all the veterans from those counties to come today and if they don’t have a job to find a job and if they need some additional resources we can help them with that as well,” Glasscock said. “We have the VA Healthcare system is here. We have someone here doing HIV testing, Goodwill, Mountain Comm Care, and many others.”
Glasscock says that coming out of the pandemic many people are looking for jobs and many employers are looking for workers.
“The unemployment rate has went high and then went back down, but there’s still a lot of employers that have job openings right now and employers are very desperate, and they specifically want to hire veterans,” Glasscock said.
This is the first year for this event, but officials are hopeful that it will continue for years to come, saying that this is their way of being able to give back to the people who protect us.
“We depend on our veterans for so much and when they come back we want to be able to serve them the best that we can,” Glasscock. “So, by helping them with the jobs and resources they need, that’s something we can definitely do to help them.”
The event is going until 2 p.m. Officials say to bring your military ID with you if you plan on coming out.
