Two charged after injured 3-year-old brought to hospital

Two people are behind bars after Boone County Detectives say they beat a 3-year-old boy about the face, leaving multiple injuries.

According to investigators, staff at St. Elizabeth Healcare in Edgewood reported on Tuesday that a boy had come to the hospital with significant facial injuries consistent with abuse. Investigators determined the boy’s mother was Karen Spurlock, 31, and went to her home on Irish Way in Union where they found the Spurlock, the boy, and Shane Sasher, 34.

Detectives say the boy had multiple abrasions and contusions under both eyes, along with injuries to his forehead, temples, cheeks, and nose. Investigators say the boy also had a laceration under his left eye that needed several stitches, and that the eye had swollen shut.

Investigating further, detectives say they discovered the child had been through two separate assaults, and then had been sent to bed after being given Motrin. The next morning, when Spurlock and Sasher attempted to wake up the boy, they reportedly thought he was deceased. Instead of calling 911, however, detectives say they later took the child to St. Elizabeth, where they allegedly told staff members the boy had fallen down the stairs.

Based on inconsistencies in Spurlock and Sasher’s stories, the two were arrested and charged with criminal abuse and assault. They were taken to the Boone County Detention Center.

The child was placed with a family member upon discharge from the hospital.
