LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – The man who killed a 17-year-old inside Fayette Mall back in August 2020 was sentenced on Thursday.

Police said Xavier Hardin shot and killed 17-year-old Kenneth Bottoms Jr. and injured two bystanders.

A judge sentenced Hardin to 22 years behind bars on several charges including manslaughter, assault, and wanton endangerment.

Hardin pleaded guilty to the charges during a hearing in March. At the sentencing, we heard from the father of Bottoms, as well as from Hardin.

“Truly don’t understand, why it couldn’t have been hashed out a different way. Having been to the gravesite, I mean, I know one day you’re doing to get out, you’re going to have kids, but do you think five years is enough for a life?” said the father of the victim, Kenneth Bottoms Sr.

“And I’m sorry for all the living survivors of this tragedy. It was a life and death situation, and I feel that my life was spared, as well as I deeply apologize for putting those innocent people’s lives in danger and for those random bullets that hit those innocent people,” said Hardin.

Hardin was given credit for the 619 days he has already served in jail.
