LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — As summer gets underway, one organization is making sure kids of all backgrounds are getting in on the fun.
YMCA Central Kentucky is hosting a water safety event Monday for more than 50 Fayette County students who might not otherwise have access to a pool or swimming lessons.
The organization is also offering free swimming lesson vouchers to the group. YMCA staff said its important children of all backgrounds have access to these opportunities.
“Swimming is a very important life skill. Drowning is actually the second leading accidental cause of death for children. So if we can help prevent that by teaching them these safety skills that’s the goal. We’ve actually had several instances where a kid in our swim lesson program has fallen into a pool or been in a situation where the skills that they learned in our lessons actually saved their lives,” said Caitlin Ellis, YMCA Central Kentucky.
The water safety event will take place Monday at the High Street YMCA.
