LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (FOX 56) – A violent drive down Highway 80 happened Wednesday afternoon that Laurel County deputies say has a man behind bars.
They say 46-year-old Brian Eldridge admitted to shooting a car as they raced down the busy road, killing the other driver.
“When we got there we found a male subject with multiple gunshot wounds in a pick-up truck along the roadside,” Deputy Gilbert Acciardo said.
Deputies say witnesses told them Eldridge and the victim were driving side-by-side down a two-lane portion of the Hal Rogers Parkway Wednesday afternoon when the shooting happened.
When the victim pulled off the side, witnesses say Eldridge turned around, shot more at the truck, and sped off toward Somerset where he was stopped.
“We don’t have those often. They’re few and far between. Nationwide, you see roadside shootings quite frequently but here in Laurel County or even probably in Kentucky, it’s a very rare occurrence,” Acciardo said.
Deputies say with the number of bullets fired, the situation could have been much worse for innocent drivers.
“The Hal Rogers Parkway, along with I-75, they’re major roadways here. The traffic between Somerset and London, it’s bumper to bumper out there sometimes,” Acciardo said.
Deputies say it’s a reminder to be alert when behind the wheel, not knowing what you could be faced with.
“Be aware of what’s going on, and if you see something like that, if you need to swerve, if you need to slam on your breaks, whatever you need to do to get away from the situation,” Acciardo said.
Deputies say Eldridge and the victim were acquaintances, and Eldridge didn’t know why he shot the victim. He was booked in the Laurel County Detention Center.
