LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Voters in District 22 will head to the polls to elect a new state senator on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

The special election was called after the sudden death of State Sen. Tom Buford on July 6, 2021.

The winner of this election will complete the remainder of Buford’s 4-year term which comes to an end in Dec. 2022.

Buford was elected to office in 2018.

Democratic candidate Helen Bukulmez spoke with FOX 56 about her campaign and the issues she hopes to focus on if elected to represent the district in Frankfort.

“My priorities are going to be to advocate for our farmers, our small businesses, and working people,” said Bukulmez.

Dr. Donald Douglas is running against Bukulmez on the Republican ticket.

The Douglas campaign did not respond to FOX 56’s interview request.
