House fires started by dry Christmas trees are uncommon, but catastrophic when they happen. If you went the ‘real’ route this year, your tree is probably dried out, and dry trees are a fire hazard. That means it’s time to toss the tree.

The first thing you want to do is remove all the lights and decorations. If you have a City of Lexington collection service, throw the tree to the curb on your regular trash collection day. Do not leave it in your garage.

If you don’t have the garbage service, you can take it to the Haley Pike Waste Management Facility. There, employees will break it down into woodchips for free mulch giveaway day in the spring.

If you want to ditch the dump, another option is to bring it to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. They have a drop-off site until Jan. 15.
