LEXINGTON, KY (WDKY)– A woman is dead and a Lexington police officer is seriously hurt after a crash on New Circle Road.

It happened on the inner loop of New Circle between Harrodsburg and Nicholasville Roads around 1:30 a.m. Monday morning.

Police say a driver going the wrong way collided with a police cruiser.

Lexington Police say they don’t believe the officer was out looking for the wrong-way driver.

“We believe it was at the end of her shift and she just happened to be in the area, possibly heading home,” said Sgt. Donnell Gordon, Lexington Police Department. “So, at this time, we don’t believe she was actually involved in the investigation.”

Police described the crash as “very violent” and said that Lexington firefighters had to come out and remove both drivers from their cars.

The officer was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The other driver, a 38-year-old woman, was pronounced dead. The coroner’s office has yet to release her name.

The inner and outer loops of New Circle Road were closed for several hours, between Harrodsburg Road and Nicholasville Road, while crews worked the scene.
