LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky linebacker DeAndre Square was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in a vote of the league’s coaches, it was announced Thursday. He is the ninth Wildcat to receive the honor under coach Mark Stoops’ guidance.
Square (Detroit) led all UK freshmen with 29 total tackles on the season, including at least one in 11 of the Cats’ 12 games. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound outside backer tallied 2.5 tackles for loss, forced a fumble, broke up a pass and logged three quarterback hurries as the primary backup to senior Jordan Jones.
Square recorded a career-high six tackles against Texas A&M, forced a fumble at Tennessee and chased down a ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage twice in the final three games of the regular season.
Previous Wildcats to be named to the SEC All-Freshman Team since Stoops took over in 2013 include center Jon Toth (2013), kicker Austin MacGinnis, offensive guard Ramsey Meyers (2014), tight end C.J. Conrad, cornerback Chris Westry (2015), running back Benny Snell Jr., offensive guard Logan Stenberg (2016) and return specialist Lynn Bowden Jr. (2017).
