Tournament championship banner unveiled at Morehead St. men’s hoops game

MOREHEAD, Ky. (FOX 56) – Banner night was a moment of reflection and accomplishment for the Morehead State men’s basketball program on Thursday night.

The team lifted its 2021 Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship banner into the rafters before its home game at Johnson Arena.

The Eagles then took the court for a showdown against Transylvania University and took care of business, winning 84-59.

The 2020-21 season was a special one in Morehead, with the team putting together a 23-8 record and a trip to the NCAA tournament. They took down Southeast Missouri, local-foe Eastern Kentucky, and top-seeded Belmont on the way to the OVC tournament title and automatic bid to the big dance.

They earned a No. 14 seed and lost to No. 3 West Virginia in the first round.

This was the first OVC tournament championship since 2011, when the Eagles were led by future NBA first round pick Kenneth Faried. That team also won a game in the NCAA tournament as a No. 13 seed, upsetting No. 4 Louisville in the first round.

The Eagles are now 2-2 on the season. They lost to Auburn to start the regular season but they get another shot at a Power-Five opponent this weekend, traveling to Mississippi State.
