CHAMPAIGN, Il. (FOX 56) – The Kentucky men’s tennis team just wrapped up its best season in program history, making a trip to the NCAA national championship match for the first time ever. After team competition wrapped up, they moved on to individual play.
No. 4 Liam Draxl and No. 21 Gabriel Diallo each received a big to compete in the NCAA singles competition. Diallo got it started with a win over Baylor’s Adrian Boitan, the No. 5 seed in the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Draxl retired from his match against Wake Forest’s Eduardo Nava despite having a lead when he pulled from the match. The reigning ITA Player of the Year won his first set 6-4 and was losing in the second set 2-1 but could not continue due to an injury, so his season comes to a close.
Diallo advances to the Round of 32 and will face Ohio State’s Matej Vocel on Tuesday, a familiar opponent after beating him in the Final Four last weekend which helped send the Wildcats to the NCAA title match.
