LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) – Big Blue Nation’s hearts are heavy as it prepares for today’s basketball game against Tennessee.

According to current head coach, John Calipari, legendary, national-championship-winning head coach, Joe B. Hall passed away this morning at 93.

Calipari took to social media to express not only his grief over the passing of his friend and mentor but also to remember how important Hall was to the team, the program, and the fanbase.

“Coach Joe B. Hall – my friend, my mentor, and an icon in our state and in our profession – passed away this morning. Coach Hall took over a program and carried on the winning tradition and legacy of excellence of Kentucky basketball,” Calipari wrote.

Calipari continued by expressing that Hall always met him with a smile.

Hall took over the program in 1972 after Adolph Rupp retired and coached until he retired in 1985. Hall won the 1978 national championship and coached Kentucky to three final four appearances (1975, 1978, and 1984).

According to Calipari, Hall was “beloved by everyone”.
