BLACKSBURG, Va. (FOX 56) – The Kentucky softball team had made a NCAA Super Regional appearance in every season since 2016, but that run came to an end on Sunday with a loss to No. 3 Virginia Tech in the regional final.

The Wildcats beat Virginia Tech on Saturday which sent the Hokies down to the loser’s bracket, but they beat Miami (OH) later Saturday night in the elimination game and beat Kentucky on Sunday afternoon, forcing a 3rd winner-take-all game between them that the Hokies won, 5-4.

Saturday’s thriller sent Kentucky to the winner’s bracket with a three-run go-ahead homerun from Renee Abernathy to win that game 5-4, but Virginia Tech bounced back to win both Sunday games, 9-2 and 5-4 to advance.

Virginia Tech hosted the Blacksburg Regional and will also host the Super Regional against Florida, while Kentucky’s season ends early with a record of 37-19.
